Oral Yeast Infections: How to Diagnose and Treat Thrush
While the yeast Candida albicans is most known for causing vaginal infections, it can also cause infections of the mouth, called oral candidiasis or
thrush
. This is a fairly common condition in babies, older adults, or people with certain medical conditions, and less common in healthy adults.
Candida albicans is actually present in small amounts in the mouth and digestive tracts of healthy people without any signs or symptoms of infection. However, if the immune system becomes weak, the yeast can overgrow and invade, causing thrush.
Oral candidiasis
is most common in infants, older adults, people using antibiotics or steroid medications, or those with weak immune systems, which can be from an immunocompromising condition like HIV or AIDS or from certain cancer treatments, like chemotherapy or radiation therapy of the head and neck. Inhaled corticosteroids, which are used as a treatment for asthma, can also increase the risk of developing thrush by altering the balance of normal microorganisms in the mouth.
Pregnancy
can also increased the risk of developing an oral yeast infection, as the hormonal fluctuations that occur can alter the natural pH balance of the body so that Candida can overgrow. Diabetes is also a known risk factor because increased sugar levels in the blood create a breeding ground for yeast.
In babies, Candida Infection tends to occur because the immune system is not yet strong enough to keep the yeast at bay. Similarly, a person’s immune system tends to weaken as they get older, so thrush becomes more common. Older adults can also get a particular type of oral candidiasis called denture stomitis, which is caused by Candida infection around dentures.
An
oral yeast infection
appears as a white, velvety lesion in the mouth and on and around the tongue. The area under the white plaque may be irritated and bleed easily. Most people won’t notice any symptoms, but if the infection is more severe there may be pain with eating or swallowing, a loss of taste, or a cottony feeling in the mouth.
Thrush has a very characteristic appearance and can usually be diagnosed by your doctor with a simple physical examination. If the diagnosis is unclear, your doctor may take a scraping of one of the lesions and examine it under the microscope to determine if Candida is present.
In infants, thrush is a common condition and is usually not worrisome. It tends to clear on its own within a few weeks. If the infection does not go away on its own, or if your baby is having trouble eating because of discomfort from the sores, make sure to see a doctor.
In healthy adults, an oral yeast infection is usually easy to treat with antifungal medications. Nystatin in a liquid antifungal which can be swished around the mouth to eliminate the infection in ten to fourteen days. There are also antifungals in pill or lozenge form that are similarly effective.
In people with severely weakened immune systems, the infection may be harder to treat. Antifungal medications may need to be taken for a much longer period of time to completely eradicate the Candida, and many people will have an ongoing problem with thrush even if they undergo treatment.
